RESCHEDULED: Community forum is now January 23 to discuss proposed boundary changes
The East Salem community is invited to attend a public forum regarding proposed changes to school attendance area boundaries on Monday, January 23 at 6:00 p.m. at McKay High School. A new elementary school is being constructed in East Salem near Cordon Road and Sunnyview Road and is scheduled to open in Fall 2012.
New school attendance area boundaries are needed to assign students to the new school, as well as balance enrollments and relieve overcrowding at existing schools. In addition, students currently attending Hazel Green Elementary must be reassigned to one or more neighboring schools, since Hazel Green is scheduled to be repurposed before the start of the next school year. At the forum, community members will view possible boundary change options and share feedback.
New boundaries are scheduled to be adopted by the School Board in March 2012 for the 2012-13 school year. For questions or more information about the boundary change process, please contact any East Salem school principal or project coordinator Mike Bednarek at 503-399-3290. |

At the September 13 work session, the School Board discussed the proposal to repurpose Hazel Green and Rosedale Elementary schools at the end of the current school year.
The proposal is a continuation of a recommendation put forth by district staff last year as a cost saving measure in response to the district's budget crisis. The district is again estimating a budget shortfall of $20 million for the 2012-13 school year.
More information regarding the proposal and on Rosedale and Hazel Green elementaries is available in the following handout:
Information on Rosedale and Hazel Green Elementary Schools »
A Public Hearing will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 6:00 p.m. at McKay High School, and interested persons may present testimony on the proposal. Please attend to share your thoughts on the "repurposing" of Hazel Green. |

All parents, students, staff and the community are invited to suggest names for the two new elementary schools opening in Salem in fall of 2012.
One school is being constructed in East Salem near Cordon Road and Sunnyview Road, and another near Madras Street in South Salem. Nominations for school names are being accepted through November 30, 2011. Nominations can be submitted through an online form or a paper form.
Please visit http://www.salemkeizer.org/content/nominate-name-new-east-and-south-salem-schools
The School Board will make a final decision on the school names in March, 2012.
Both schools are being constructed with funding provided by the construction bond approved by voters in 2008. Bond funds can only be used for projects associated with the 2008 bond measure, like overcrowding and repairs, and cannot be used for school operations. Thanks to the community’s support of the bond, our schools are becoming safer, healthier and less crowded learning environments. |
